How You Can Calm Your Toothache

Toothache Relief Options

Everyone knows that a toothache is an unpleasant experience, but it can also be an indicator of a more serious problem. If you have a toothache that lasts for more than a day or two, we recommend that you contact a dentist immediately. But, what should you do in the meantime? Here are a few suggestions:

Rinse with warm salt water: This remedy is one of the most commonly recommended methods for attaining relief from a toothache. Simply put a quarter teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water and swish it around.

Use benzocaine with care: An antiseptic with benzocaine can provide temporary relief. However, if you use this type of antiseptic, please follow the instruction as listed on your package. It is also important to never use a product with benzocaine on a child younger than two.

Use over-the-counter painkillers: You may have heard that it’s a good idea to put the pain killer directly on the gum of the afflicted tooth. This isn’t true. Pain medications are acidic and could actually cause harm to your gums. We do recommend painkiller, but only if you just swallow them.
